19 Dreamy Vintage Pictures of Stevie Nicks That Prove She’s Forever Been a Free Spirit

Harry Styles once described legendary Fleetwood Mac front woman Stevie Nicks—who famously performed with the singer in 2020—as “a magical gypsy godmother,” and he’s bang on the money. Mystical, free-spirited, and fiercely bohemian, Nicks is a well-loved icon of the hippie generation.
Carefree should be Stevie’s middle name—not least for the fact that her effortlessly beautiful aura lights up every stage she graces. At the dawn of the ’70s, a young Nicks offered her instantly recognizable harmonious voice to Fleetwood Mac, a band that has since been coined a soundtrack of the era. Often seen with her ribboned tambourine in tow, Nicks is the ultimate performer. Having curated a foolproof wardrobe comprised of ponchos, sweeping dresses, flared sleeves, and plenty of fringing, she is deservedly considered a style icon.
Numerous designers have had their turn at recreating her unique look, namely Clare Waight Keller, Michael Kors, and Hedi Slimane. Back in 1997, Anna Sui even dedicated her whole fall show to Nicks. And more recently, the essence of the famous front woman’s style has been brought to the small screen via Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six—an adaptation of the bestselling book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was originally inspired by Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac.
The singer’s style sidekick, Margi Kent, helped Nicks compile her tour wardrobe in 1975 after a friend put them in touch. When speaking recently with British Vogue, Nicks recalled a time when she showed Kent who she “wanted to be” and drew a stick girl. “She was wearing a little riding jacket nipped in at the waist, and a filmy handkerchief skirt that was kind of ragged at the bottom. I was working as a waitress and a cleaning lady five months before this, but I said, ‘I want beautiful handmade suede platform boots that are high but not bulky. And I want a top hat, which I will find out on the road myself.’”
Unsurprisingly, the 75-year-old’s outstanding beauty hasn’t dimmed—her tousled locks appear practically untouched and her dress code remains reliably marvelous. Here, Vogue documents Stevie’s wonder years, below.
