Adam Henson admits he 'wasn't bothered' about getting Countryfile job after audition

Adam Henson, 54, is a farmer by trade but on a whim landed himself in the world of media, and is now a well-known face among the fans of the farming community as a presenter on Countryfile. But after applying for the job back in 2001 on recommendation from his partner, he admitted to Express.co.uk that he “wasn’t bothered” about getting it.

“I wasn’t all that bothered about whether I got the job or not,” he said in the recent interview.

“It was something that was just a bit of a whim, a bit of a silly idea that Charlie, my partner said, ‘Oh, go on, give it a go, what have you got to lose?'”

So with his TV partner’s backing and with other family members sporting a background in television, the already seasoned production savvy farmer applied for the position via a video tape, along with 3,500 other candidates.

After the BBC whittled the applications down to just 20, they were then invited to a hotel for further auditions.

“So that’s a highlight for me, meeting really good people.”

But aside from the long-lasting friendships that were made on-set, the show also offered Adam with another bonus.

“It’s taken me to places that I would have never have gone,” he said.

“All over the UK to extraordinary parts of the British Isles that I would have never gone in my normal life; sailing out to the Hebrides and out of Tory Island off the north coast of Northern Ireland.”

Adam added: “I’ve seen some amazing sights; minke whales and basking sharks and met some extraordinary farmers – brilliant business people across the land.”

Also on the list of places Countryfile has taken him is New Zealand; a country he once visited after finishing agricultural college and the show allowed him to retrace his steps, a feeling he described as nothing short of “fantastic”.

“I also went out to America, and we rounded up huge herds of Hereford cattle on horseback, but also in helicopters. And you know, that was like a childhood dream come true.”

Countryfile continues Sunday on BBC One at 18:30pm.
