Aditya Seal on Indoo Ki Jawani: Why judge after seeing two minutes of two-hour film?

When the makers of Indoo Ki Jawani saw Aditya Seal in Student of the Year 2 (SOTY 2), they knew they had found their hero. But they were worried whether an actor, who played such a glamorous role in SOTY 2, would fit in their film. “This is a rustic character,” says Seal, who stars opposite Kiara Advani in the comedy. “Abir [Sengupta, director] knew exactly what he wanted. The film isn’t slapstick, but a comedy of errors. I am all for entertainment, but movies should have depth and a social slant.”

The trailer left everyone wondering whether Seal plays a Pakistani character. “That’s a secret,” he laughs. Unfortunately, after the promo dropped, a section of netizens attacked the film, claiming that it depicted a Pakistani man-Indian woman romance. “People have seen two minutes of a two-hour film, and have given their judgment. I have a problem when people pass judgments just because they have been given a mouthpiece. We’re attempting to break this stereotype with the film. The movie shows how we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.”

Seal has had a rough year, having lost his father to COVID-19 in September. Taking a cue from the words of Meghan Markle, we ask him the all-important question: Is he okay? “No, I’m not. I don’t know how I have coped over the last few months. My heart said I should pause and process my grief. But I have responsibilities on my shoulders, so I have to keep going.”
