Akira: You Can Finally Own Kaneda’s Iconic Red Jacket
There’s surely no red jacket more iconic in pop culture than the one worn by Michael Jackson in the Thriller music video. But if any 1980’s outfit can give the Thriller jacket a run for its money, it’s definitely the one worn by Kaneda in 1988’s Akira. And now you can finally add that legendary attire to your personal wardrobe.
IGN can exclusively reveal Funimation’s Kaneda Jacket. Check out some footage of the jacket in the video player above or embedded below:
The Kaneda jacket is directly modeled on the design by Akira manga creator/film director Katsuhiro Otomo. The piece was brought to life by Carlo Levy (Managing Director of DYBEX S.A), Alessandro Trombetta (Designer) and Stefan Henzgen (MD of Van Doornum GmbH & Co.).
“I have been a fan of AKIRA since 1989 when Epic Comics first released it, and imports arrived in Europe,” said Levy in a statement. “I always dreamed of having a replica of the iconic jacket and was surprised it hadn’t been created by anyone outside of Japan yet, so I did what any super fan would do…I went after the license and had our team design it!”
The Kaneda Jacket is being sold exclusively through the Funimation Shop. The jacket is priced at $450 and limited to just 300 pieces in the US. It’ll go on sale on Tuesday, July 13. Given the ever-growing cosplay scene, we suspect it won’t remain in stock for very long.
The Kaneda Jacket proves that at least some piece of the Akira franchise can exist in then live-action, even if the long-awaited live-action movie continues to stall out. Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi was attached to direct the live-action remake, but in February 2020 Waititi told Variety, “I think eventually it will happen. I’m just not sure if I’ll be doing it.”
However, it does appear Akira is getting a new anime series, one that will adapt the original manga in greater depth. Otomo himself is even attached to produce.
