'Arrow's Katherine McNamara to Lead Thriller Movie 'Sugar'

Katherine McNamara, who has previously starred in Shadowhunters and Arrow, has just been cast in the thriller film Sugar, as reported by Deadline.

Sugar, which is a dual Mexican-Canadian production, is set to begin filming this month in Cancun, Mexico and Montreal, Quebec. The film will follow two influencers who travel to the Caribbean and South Pacific and become best friends over the course of their party-heavy trip. But as their vacation goes on, the veneer of their online personalities will wear off, leading to a real-life clash that threatens to rip them apart.

Jasmine Sky Sarin will star alongside McNamara, along with Eric Bruneau of Laurence Anyways, and Spencer List who previously appeared in the Freeform series The Fosters. Vic Sarin will direct the film, and develop the screenplay along with Annelies Kavan and Ben Johnstone. The film comes from Sepia Films and Connect3 Media. Tina Pehme and Kim Roberts of Sepia Films will produce alongside Connect3 Media.

McNamara is best known for her roles on television, having previously starred as Clary Fray in the Freeform series Shadowhunters, a fantasy series which follows angel-human hybrids called shadowhunters who seek to destroy demons who roam the earth. The series has a devoted fanbase, despite being cancelled in 2019. She has also played Mia Smoak in the CW’s Arrow and The Flash series.

In terms of full-length feature projects, McNamara also starred in the Maze Runner film franchise as Sonya. She also held a recurring role in the CBS miniseries adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Stand. Most recently, McNamara starred in the film Untitled Horror Movie, which was filmed remotely due to the pandemic and released earlier this year.

A release date has not yet been set for Sugar, which is set to start filming later this month.
