Attendance Allowance: Everything you need to know about the DWP support

Attendance Allowance can help with some of the extra costs associated with disabilities and gaining extra care. The sum, much like Personal Independence Payments, is provided at two different rates, with the amount a person receives dependent on the level of care they need. However, it is worth noting that Attendance Allowance does not cover any mobility needs a person may have.
People must usually be in Great Britain to claim, and have been so for at least two of the last three years.
They must be habitually resident in the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, and not be subject to immigration control.
Those living in Switzerland or a European Economic Area (EEA) may find themselves the exception to these rules, and thus these individuals should investigate a claim further.
Attendance Allowance is not a means-tested benefit, which means what a person has in savings or how much they earn will not affect their entitlement.
But rates can change if a person’s circumstances change, for example, if their condition becomes more severe or they become terminally ill.
This will need to be reported to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) at the earliest point of convenience.
Britons have been warned that if they fail to report a change in circumstances, or provide wrong information, they could be taken to court or forced to pay a penalty.
Such changes also include personal information which must also be raised.
This can be if a doctor’s details change, if a person changes their own name, address or bank details, or if a claimant goes into hospital or a care home.
The change in circumstances can be reported by contacting the Attendance Allowance helpline, details of which can be found on claim forms and the government website.
For those who wish to claim Attendance Allowance for the first time, they will need to apply via post.
The form can be found on the government’s website and then printed, with instructions on how to fill the form in.
It can them be sent freepost to the DWP who will process the claim and inform applicants of the outcome.
It is also worth noting Attendance Allowance can be backdated to the date a person makes a claim.
If the claim pack is returned within six weeks, it will usually be the date a form is received or the date a person called the enquiry line.
