Ben Shephard: GMB host recalls 'gripping fear' over becoming a new parent 'Traumatic'

Ben Shepherd, 45, took a trip down memory lane to when his boys were babies and remembered the “gripping fear” he felt that caused him to watch his youngest’s chest move up and down three times before he could leave for work on Good Morning Britain. The presenter and his wife Annie are the proud parents of two sons Jack and Sam, but Ben admitted there’s always a worry that as a new parent, you’re going to so something wrong.
In a recent interview on Dave Berry’s latest episode of his podcast Dadpod, he asked Ben what he remembered about those days when his boys were tots.
“As a dad and as Annie’s husband, I was just a vessel for tea, cleaning, food, anything she needed help the baby stay alive, which was traumatic in itself,” he recalled.
“I remember going to work very early in the morning and I’d look at Sam when he was born and I’d have to watch his chest go up and down three times before I could leave the house!”
He added: “But I couldn’t wake him up as well.

“So there’s that absolute gripping fear that you’re going to do something wrong that’s going to cause some kind of harm.”
He noted that the first few months of parenthood are about “keeping your head above water” and providing for the mother who is the “brains and engine room” behind it all.
But for Ben, he believes it all changes at around 18-months-old.
“Suddenly you’re getting feedback, they’re chatting loads, they’re moving around more, they’re quite happy to be away from mum and do a bit more with you,” he beamed.
“But like you say, it’s trying to find a way to make it special, because you don’t want those days and all the days are merging into one, so you’ve to try to take those opportunities to try and make it special.”
Charlotte replied: “It is a tough time for everybody and there are lots of different challenges aren’t there.
“But if you can look back and say, ‘You know what, I made the most of that time or I did something special on that day,’ it’s about making those memories, it isn’t necessarily going out and doing something, is it?”
