Ben Shephard says Kate Garraway's 'eternal optimism' is inspirational during family ordeal

Good Morning Britain host Ben Shephard has said his co-star Kate Garraway’s “eternal optimism” is inspirational, following her very difficult year. Kate’s husband remains in hospital after he was struck down with coronavirus at the start of the year.
The father-of-two said his colleague was so positive and professional at work that he often forgot what a “relentless journey” she was on.
Since returning to GMB, Kate, 53, has regularly given updates on her husband Derek Draper’s health on the programme.
The political lobbyist, also 53, was placed in an induced coma back in March and remains in the care of doctors, battling numerous health issues brought on by the virus.
His stay in hospital is believed to be the longest of a COVID-19 patient in the UK.

Talking about his co-star, Ben said: “There is not a day when I don’t think about her and what is happening that day and whether I can do something to help her today.
“There is not a moment when I’m working with her where that admiration tarnishes.”
He added: “Kate is so brilliant and professional and we have fun so you sometimes forget the relentless journey that they are on at the moment.
“We all want to know what the outcome is going to be and that is the hardest thing, not knowing.
“It is so, so difficult and her eternal optimism and positivity is something that we can all look at. It is something that I use to inspire me as well,” the 45-year-old went on to add.
“Working alongside somebody that you care for and you are worried about, plus also trying to do the job, it’s a huge thing and I am very grateful that he has been there and I am aware how tough it’s been for him…
“He has been amazing, you will make me cry now,” she added, on the verge of tears.
Kate, who shares two children with her husband, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, also reflected on the “missed moments” of 2020.
She said: “There have been so many missed moments haven’t there? The first one was not having our chocolate Easter egg hunt that my mum organises every year.
