“This is going to be my second marriage. And I had not announced my divorce publicly. So I was being really private about our relationship. And since our relationship has finally been accepted, we decided to make it public,” Priya Malik told us during a candid conversation. Priya and Karan had been dating for a year prior to their engagement and had been living in together in Mumbai. And they knew that they were going to end together. Both the families were aware of their relationship right from the start and wanted them to take a step further. Revealing the details about their engagement, Priya said, “It was a very intimate setting. We had like 25 people only because both Karan and I are private and low-key people. We both wanted it that way. It took place in a Chhattarpur gurudwara and then we had a little garden booked where the engagement dinner took place in the presence of more family than friends.”
She said that the wedding is most likely to be around Diwali next year. It will mainly be an intimate affair in the presence of their family members. “Because it is Covid, we are not preparing a lot but I have already started thinking what I am going to wear and I want to keep it really traditional,” she said.
And since Karan loves everything about the 90s and is really old fashioned, the wedding is going to be a very simple one and family oriented, just like it used to happen in 1999. She had also written a poem about it called ‘2019 Mein 1999’ which had gone viral on the internet.
And if you want to know how it all started, then let us tell you that Priya and Karan had met in the lift of the building where the two lived. And that was just for merely 15 seconds.
“It was very strange. It happened in 2017, one year after Bigg Boss. I was living in this building in Bandstand called Sea Bird and Karan was also living there. I lived there for almost one year but I didn’t know who my neighbour is. And that day after coming back home from the gym I entered the lift and there was this guy. He just spoke with me normally, ‘Oh you live here’, the normal question jo log puchte hai. And I was really annoyed at that time, and I was like ‘Who is this random guy and trying to talk to me?’ I didn’t give him much information but I told him that I live on the 14th floor and he told that he lives on the 15th floor,” she said.
She continued, “Then I met him one more time when he was offering me some help. I got really sick, I was down with Malaria. At that time, we were not dating or anything, it was just a relationship which was born out of kindness and compassion for your neighbour. He was almost like a god to me because I was sitting all alone and my parents were in the US at that time and there was nobody to help. But he came in handy.”
A year later, Priya and Karan started dating and it was also the year when she got officially divorced from her former husband Bhushan Malik. They made their relationship official and Priya knew that she has found her forever.
The two are currently living in Bandra but are thinking of buying a place of their own very soon. “My parents were obviously really happy, they were not sure what I am going to do after my divorce. So they were really happy with the fact that I decided to take that leap of faith second time and Karan’s parents have been very accepting. He comes from a very warm loving family. They were just waiting for us to do it. They were telling us just do it during Covid ‘matlab kisiko bulana bhi nahi and just do it now, hum aa jate hai, tum log ghar pe hi kar lo.’ But we were like we will do it next year aaram se, properly thoda Gurudware me and everything,” Priya said.
But what went wrong in her first marriage to Bhushan Malik? The two were married for almost a decade and the divorce happened legally in mid-2018 in Australia. It was a love marriage and Priya was just 21 years old when she had tied the knot with Bhushan in 2008.
“Nothing went wrong to be honest. It was just a mutual decision. And that’s something I always talk about how we should normalize divorce. It doesn’t have to be ke kuch hua. There was no domestic violence, no adultery, none of those things happened. It was just two people fell out of love because we both took different paths in life. And he was an amazing guy, still is. I am happy that it happened on friendly, agreeable and respectable terms with him. And he was the first person I informed about my relationship and my engagement,” Priya said.
Priya knew that no happy marriage ends in a divorce. But now when she looks back at it, it was good for both of them. They both have moved on in a very beautiful way. “Initially, I took time for me to accept it and I didn’t even tell my family and friends for a very long time. I told them after a year,” she said.
She further added, “Some people are greatest friends but they are not that great as husband and wife and I guess that was the case with me and my ex husband. And I am glad that there were no children, because when children are involved, things are usually much more difficult because you have another life to think about. So I am also happy for the fact that we made our decision at the right time.”
The major reason for their separation was that Priya didn’t want to live in Australia anymore. Bhushan was an Australian citizen and wanted to live there and did not want to move back to India. Priya, on the other hand, had been living in India for the past 4 years now and she intended to stay here.
“I think this was one of the best decisions I made to come back here. That I find my life more creatively fulfilling and my parents are here and I prefer the Indian style of life rather than NRI style of life. I was 21 years old when I got married. So a 21-year-old also doesn’t know what’s happening. Use lagta hai hume sab pata hai but nahi pata hota,” she said.
When we asked her if her parents ever tried to convince her to stay in the marriage, Priya said that she told her parents after the divorce had happened since she did not want anybody to tell her to adjust.
“I think it’s very important to be completely committed and responsible in that space. And the long distance for 2 years (from 2016 to 2018), I realised agar mai yaha rahungi and wo waha rahenge, it’s not going to be a marriage anymore. So that is what prompted my decision. And then he also agreed. He is a lovely guy, very mature, he understood where I was coming from. And he is also dating somebody now which I think is absolutely beautiful,” Priya concluded saying that couples should remain cordial even after their separation without any animosity and bitterness.
