Can you travel without having the Covid vaccine?

Vaccines have long been heralded as the UK’s route out of lockdown. With Boris Johnson expected to confirm plans to remove all Covid restrictions in England from July 19, could rules over international travel be eased soon? If so, could your vaccine status impact your eligibility to travel?

The UK currently has strict rules around international travel the Government’s traffic light system dictates which countries are considered safe enough to travel to with limited restrictions and which are not.

The Traffic Light System dictates how severe restrictions will be when travelling to a particular country, under the system every country is ranked according to its Covid risk level.

Countries are given a green, red or amber listing and these lists are reviewed every three weeks.

In the latest easing of restrictions, Boris Johnson has announced that fully vaccinated adults will no longer have to quarantine when returning to England from amber list countries.

To be considered “fully vaccinated” you must have received two doses of the Covid vaccine.

The new rules will come into effect from July 19, they will also apply to all under-18s who aren’t currently eligible for the vaccine.

Fully-vaccinated adults and under-18s in England also won’t have to self-isolate after August 15 if they come into close contact with someone who tests positive for Covid.

With certain rules being lifted for those who have been fully vaccinated, if you haven’t had both doses of the vaccine will you still have to adhere to certain pandemic restrictions?

Aside from the easing to rules mentioned above if you have been fully vaccinated, the government hasn’t mentioned any further plans to ease restrictions on international travel for those who have received both jabs.

But, some countries require proof of vaccine for Brits to travel there and some impose harsher travel restrictions for those trying to enter without a Covid vaccine, such as the need to quarantine or to provide a negative Covid test.

Here is a list of countries where British travellers will face tougher restrictions if they haven’t had two doses of the vaccine.

Once logged in online or on the app you can request an NHS Covid Pass, this will create a QR code for you that lasts 28 days.

It is essential for Brits to regularly check which list their intended destination is on under the UK’s traffic light system.

Countries can be moved onto the amber or red list by the Government at short notice if Covid cases surge.

Likewise, restrictions imposed by foreign governments could change at a moments notice and maybe harsher than the UK’s, so to avoid disrupted travel plans check ahead.
