Earlier in the evening, Dan sent his congratulations to Sally and the BBC Breakfast team who had worked on the scoop.
Alongside a screenshot of her interview and a tweet from Royal Television Society announcing the news, Dan wrote: “Brilliant news.
“Well played @BBCBreakfast & particularly @sallynugent, producer @ClaireRyanSport and our boss @BBCFrediani for driving it through #RTSAwards.”
On Instagram he’s said that it was the first time a breakfast show had won the award.
In their tweet, the RTS said the programme showed “great contact building, perseverance, diplomacy and a clear eye for a story”.
