On social media, she captioned a video of herself: “Sometimes walking helps us remember those we’ve lost @pcbigwalk …..in old age or if they’ve been taken too soon through cancer, disease or other reasons. I’m an early walker…..some thoughts this week.”

In the video, she told Twitter followers: “I lost a dear friend last week… somebody I loved very much. So many of us loved.

“Sometimes when you are missing somebody, whether they have passed in old age or too soon, being out in the open really seems to connect you with them again.”

Carol added: “And I am on the coastal path – I am on a beach here. It is so beautiful. All alone. The early walker, thinking of people as we should.”

One Twitter user replied: “So true. I went for a walk a few weeks ago with our eleven year old son and he looked up to the stars and said, ‘grandad watches over us each day’. I must say I had a few tears.”

A second commented: “Bless you Carol . The missing them is the hardest part . I m sure whoever you were thinking of were right there beside you . I often wonder were ever they are do they miss us too ? X”

And a third said: “Carol, I lost my dad 5 years ago and now whenever I’m out hiking in the hills above Adelaide I use his walking pole, so while he may not be able to see the beauty all around me, he’s still there with me in my thoughts every step I take.”

The Big Walk Celeb Team is captained by Carol Vorderman this year and will see people walk 26 miles in July to help men with prostate cancer.

The charity, based in Wales, will give out a t shirt and medal to people raising £50.

The charity says: “Throughout July, walk 26 miles your way, whether it’s a mile at a time or two half marathons throughout the month. Your fundraising will help Prostate Cymru fund important research and support services that ensure men in Wales suffering with prostate diseases will have access to the best available treatments from the NHS in Wales.”
