The 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship Game is set to be contested between Alabama and Ohio State. Both programs breezed to victory in their respective CFP semifinal matchups on New Year’s Day, where the Crimson Tide unsurprisingly rolled Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl—winning by a score of 31-14 as heavy favorites—and the Buckeyes shocked Clemson by a 49-28 margin in the Sugar Bowl despite being rather sizable underdogs. Oddsmakers expect Alabama to claim another national title next Monday to cap off a perfect 2020-21 campaign, but Ohio State has also yet to be bested during this NCAA football season and should not be underestimated after its most recent performance.

CFP National Championship 2021 Odds

Point Spread: The No. 1 Crimson Tide have opened as seven-point favorites in the National Championship Game, a line notably narrower than the 20 points they were laying to the Fighting Irish on Friday. ‘Bama failed to beat the number in the Rose Bowl, however, giving up a meaningless touchdown in the final minute that allowed Notre Dame to secure a backdoor cover. The No. 3 Buckeyes also deserve an immense amount of credit for their impressive performance against the No. 2 Tigers in Dallas, as the team defied the odds and outright won despite going off as a seven-point ‘dog for the matchup. Prior to the semifinals being played, the lookahead betting line for a 2021 CFP National Championship between Alabama and Ohio State was favoring the Tide by 10.5 points, but that was quickly adjusted down by more than a field goal before going up on the board following a convincing Buckeyes victory. That win continued Ohio State’s trend of being the best underdog squad in the nation in recent years, with the school now having not only covered, but outright won nine of the last 10 games in which it was receiving points.

Total: The total on this Alabama-Ohio State national title game has been set at 75.5 points, one of the highest over-unders in CFP history. Only the 2018 Orange Bowl—which doubled as a CFP semifinal that year—between Alabama and Oklahoma had a larger total, closing at 80.5 points. The Tide and Sooners failed to reach that mark though, combining to score just shy of 80 points in a game Alabama would go on to win by a 45-34 margin. Barring a dramatic dip over the next week or so, the 2021 CFP National Championship Game will slot in ahead of the 2019 Peach Bowl for the second-highest total in the six-year history of the current postseason format. That contest between the Sooners and Tigers ended up going well over thanks to an offensive explosion from LSU, with the program obliterating Oklahoma 63-28 on its way to winning the title last year.

Moneyline: Alabama is a -275 favorite and Ohio State is a +200 underdog in the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. This translate to one needing to risk $2.75 to win $1 on Alabama outright winning the game by any score, while Ohio State would return $2 for each $1 wagered if it can pull off an upset. The moneyline odds indicate a 73% implied probability of a Crimson Tide victory and a 33% chance that the Buckeyes manage to win the national title. These percentages add up to more than 100% due to the “vig”, which is the cut a sportsbook takes for arranging bets.

CFP National Championship 2021 Trends

Alabama-Ohio State History: This will be the fifth all-time meeting between Alabama and Ohio State, blueblooded programs each with their own rich, storied histories and a total of 23 national championships claimed between the pair. The Crimson Tide have gotten the better of the Buckeyes in three of their four prior head-to-head clashes, picking up wins in the 1978 Sugar Bowl, 1986 Kickoff Classic and 1995 Citrus Bowl. The Buckeyes did win the most recent and arguably most important matchup, however, when they took down the Tide in the 2015 Sugar Bowl. That contest, which occurred in the semifinals of the inaugural College Football Playoff, saw Cardale Jones—Ohio State’s third-string quarterback—and running back Ezekiel Elliott lead a comeback from a 21-6 deficit and impose their will against a stout ‘Bama defense in the second half, ultimately resulting in a 42-35 win for the Buckeyes and a berth in the National Championship Game. It was a big upset for the program, given Ohio State was ranked No. 4 at the time and wagering closed with the No. 1 Crimson Tide laying seven points, the same exact betting line that the 2021 CFP National Championship has. The Buckeyes parlayed that surprise semifinal “W” into their first national title since 2002, topping the Oregon Ducks—who were seven-point chalk in the contest—a week later to win the first ever national championship in the CFP era.

How They Got Here: It is obvious the Tide played a much more rigorous schedule during the 2020 college football campaign to reach this point, running the table across a tough conference-only regular season schedule. Alabama became the first program in SEC history to go 10-0 against conference opponents and did so convincingly, winning every matchup—including three against Top-25 foes—by at least 15 points. The Crimson Tide managed to navigate past a plucky Florida team in a high-scoring SEC Championship Game before demolishing the Irish in the Rose Bowl to get back to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game for the fifth time in the last six years. Ohio State did not start its regular season until the final week of October and played just five games after three were cancelled. The Buckeyes did take down a pair of ranked opponents in that limited span and were able to slip past No. 14 Northwestern in the Big Ten championship, showing enough to the CFP committee to earn the No. 3 seed. The committee’s faith in the Buckeyes proved to be warranted after they crushed Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, a game that served as a rematch of last season’s Fiesta Bowl CFP semifinal that the Tigers narrowly won. Ohio State earned its revenge on Friday, opening the door for the team to compete for its second national title in the CFP era.

Offense/Defense Rankings: Both Alabama and Ohio State have performed quite similarly on both sides of the ball during the 2020 college football season. They both employ explosive offenses capable of putting scores on the board at will and boast defenses with plenty of talent but have the tendency to be vulnerable at times. The Buckeyes rank No. 5 in the country in total offense, averaging 544.9 yards per game on that side of the ball, which slots just ahead of the Crimson Tide, as the team comes in at No. 6 in the same category with a 535.0 YPG average. ‘Bama has produced scores slightly more reliably than Ohio State, with the Tide’s 48.2 points per game ranking only behind Kent State, a team that averaged 49.8 points per game in 2020 but only participated in four contests against far less talented opponents than these major conference squads faced. The Buckeyes scored 43.4 yards per game on average, a mark that is tied for the fifth-best in the nation this year. Alabama’s defense allowed 351.2 yards and 19.5 points per game across its 11 pre-CFP semifinal matchups, while Ohio State conceded an average of 358 yards and 21 points per game to opposing offenses in six outings leading up to the Sugar Bowl.

The Alabama Crimson Tide take on The Ohio State Buckeyes as the two teams clash in the College Football National Championship Game.

College football fans, the most bittersweet moment of the 2020-21 season has finally arrived. It is the last college football game of the season but it is the biggest game of the year, the National Championship Game, that will see the Alabama Crimson Tide take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Alabama has dominated all of their opponents this season in all phases of the game and are coming off a still-impressive victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Rose Bowl. On offense, quarterback Mac Jones threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns while completing 25 of his 30 passes. Seven of those passes were caught by Heisman winner DeVonta Smith, who turned his seven receptions into 130 yards and three scores.

On the other side of the ball, the Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a near-perfect performance that saw them beat the Clemson Tigers 49-28 in the Sugar Bowl. Despite taking a hard hit to his ribs early on, quarterback Justin Fields threw for 385 yards and six touchdowns. Fields was not alone on the Buckeye offense in having a big game, as running back Trey Sermon continued his postseason success by racking up 254 total yards and one touchdown.

Both offenses have a lot of firepower and we could be in for an old-fashioned shootout. Can the Buckeyes top the Alabama Trio? Or will the Crimson Tide seal the deal and win their third title in six years?

Here’s how to watch and bet on the Ohio State vs Alabama game

Date: Monday, Jan. 11
Start Time: 8 p.m. ET
Location: Miami Gardens, FL
Stadium: Hard Rock Stadium
TV Info: ESPN
Odds: Alabama -8.5, O/U 75.5
Live Stream: WatchESPN

Prediction: Both teams have the players on defense to make big stops and big plays to slow down the opposing offense but that may not be seen whatsoever in this matchup. Both offenses can run the ball, pass the ball, and have so much talent at the receiver position it is almost not fair. This game will come down to who has the ball last to top the other. Jones, Smith, and Najee Harris all have great performances but Fields and the Ohio State Buckeyes are on a mission to complete what they should have done a year ago, and take down the Crimson Tide, winning their first national title since 2014.

Score: Ohio State 45, Alabama 41
