Child Benefit: HMRC urges Britons to take action or risk losing vital payments

Child benefit is available to Britons who are responsible for raising a child under the age of 16, or under 20 if they remain in full time education or training. A positive to Child Benefit is that it can be claimed from the moment a child’s birth is registered, providing important financial support to new parents. However, due to the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many have been unable to register the birth of their child.
Acknowledging these difficulties, HMRC announced in April that parents and guardians would be able to make a claim for Child Benefit without registering a birth in the usual way.
This, it is thought, has enabled over 100,000 parents across the country to receive important payments throughout the crisis.
However, HMRC has now issued an update, warning new parents they will need to register the birth of their child as soon as possible, if they have not done so already.
In doing so, individuals will ensure they continue to receive the Child Benefit payments to which they are entitled.

Karl Khan, Interim Director General for Customer Services at HMRC, commented on the situation.
He provided insight into the actions some parents and guardians will need to take as it relates to Child Benefit.
Mr Khan said: “It’s really encouraging to see that parents have taken advantage of the change we put in place earlier this year to help ensure they can claim the financial support they’re entitled to.
“It is now crucial for parents who claimed Child Benefit without registering their child’s birth to do it now so that they continue to receive their benefit.”
To claim for Child Benefit, there are a number of steps parents and guardians will need to complete.
Britons will need to fill in Child Benefit claim form CH2 and send this off to the Child Benefit Office.
The relevant address is contained within the form, which can be accessed online.
It is also the responsibility of parents and guardians to keep the Child Benefit Office updated should there be any changes in circumstances.
Finally, Britons can choose to stop or restart their payments at any time, without this affecting their eligibility.
