Child benefit rates 2020/21: How much Child Benefit am I eligible for?

Child Benefit is money paid to parents or anyone who is responsible for bringing up a child in the UK. The benefit helps parents with the cost of living and raising children – and is there for a large chunk of the UK’s parents to claim.
Am I eligible for Child Benefit?
You can claim Child Benefit if you are responsible for a child under 16, or under 20 if they stay in education or unpaid training.
If the parents are divorced, the child benefit goes to the parent with whom the child lives the most.
You can claim as soon as you have registered the birth of your child, or as soon as the child comes to live with you if you are adopting.
It can take up to 12 weeks to process your claim and it can only be backdated by three months – so get your claim in as soon as you are eligible.
It also affected by the benefit cap, which sets a maximum yearly total for how much you can claim.
What you are eligible for depends on where you live and your circumstances.
For example, a single parent living with children is limited to £20,000 a year outside London but for the same situation, it’s capped at £23,000 in the capital.
So if you’re close to your limit and claim child benefit, your award may be capped.
How do I claim Child Benefit?
Child Benefit is not automatic like some state aid – you need to put in a claim to get your money.
To claim for your first child, you need to fill in Child Benefit claim form CH2 and send it to the Child Benefit Office.
For any children afterward, you can call the Child Benefit helpline on 0300 200 3100 to get them added on.
Only one parent can claim the benefit, so you will need to decide between yourselves who will get the money.
This is important as this person will get National Insurance credits toward their State Pension.
