Christian Eriksen to have ‘heart starter’ device installed following Euro 2020 collapse

Christian Eriksen will have a heart starter device implanted after he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

The midfielder collapsed towards the end of the first half during the match against Finland on Saturday.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and received immediate CPR on the pitch.

He was then taken to a local hospital in Denmark near to the Parken Stadium.

The match was suspended by English referee Anthony Taylor but play resumed once Denmark players had learned that Eriksen was awake.

Players returned to the pitch two hours later to finish the Euro 2020 opener.

Finland won 1-0 thanks to Joel Pohjanpalo’s header. Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg missed a penalty.

Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has since said that his side should not have resumed the match on the same day as the incident.

Eriksen apparently spoke to his team-mates from his hospital bed on Saturday evening and has done so again since.

He has also posted on social media to provide an update for fans.

“This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.

“Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.

“We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy the following time.”

Eriksen provided an update on his health and thanked fans for their well wishes in a touching social media post on Monday.

He posted a selfie of him smiling with his thumb up while laid on his bed in hospital.

“Hello everyone,” the 29-year-old wrote in an accompanying message.

“Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family.

“I’m fine – under the circumstances. I still have to go through examinations at the hospital but I feel okay.

“Now I will cheer on the boys in the Denmark team in the next matches.

“Play for all of Denmark. Best, Christian.”
