Cliff Richard recalls first meeting with Jimmy Savile and his concerns about 'weird' star

Sir Cliff Richard, 80, has reflected on the time he had a conversation with Jimmy Savile when he appeared on Top of the Pops. The singer admitted he was concerned the late presenter was putting on an “act”, which left him wondering who he really was.

Cliff recalled: “I got to know the presenter DJs a little.

“I’d met Pete Murray on TV shows before and Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman on his radio show. They were both nice and friendly.

“Jimmy Savile was a different matter entirely. Savile was always a very weird man.

“You could talk to him and never feel as if you had had a conversation.”

He continued in his new book The Dreamer: “He would just repeat his catchphrases – ‘Now then, now then, goodness gracious!’ – and make that bizarre yodelling noise that he used to do.

“I used to think, ‘Yes, I know that’s your act – but where’s the person inside it?'”

It is now known that Savile sexually abused hundreds of children and women during his career in the spotlight.

Allegations against him came to light after his death in 2011.

However, bass player Brian “Licorice” Locking warned Sir Cliff against the idea, as he was concerned it would offend God.

Cliff penned in his autobiography: “Every day, I missed dad so much. While in Australia, I had seen an advert for a medium. I mentioned that I was thinking of finding a medium to try to talk to dad.

“Licorice was horrified. ‘That’s a terrible idea!’ he told me. ‘Do you realise how dangerous it is? It is expressly forbidden in the Bible!’”

Brian then read the singer a passage, which said that anyone who consults a medium is “detestable”.

After learning about the worrying passage, Cliff became a Christian in the 60s when he was with The Shadows.

The musician added he “still dreams” about his dad and that he is “happy and pleased to have seen him again” when he wakes up.
