Coco Gauff knocked out of Wimbledon as Angelique Kerber reaches quarter-final
Coco Gauff’s 2021 Wimbledon Championships came to a crushing end at the hands of the experienced Angelique Kerber in their fourth-round match on Monday.
The women’s draw had opened up heading into the second week of the tournament with just three of the top 10 remaining.
World No 1 Ashleigh Barty remains the women to beat but Gauff was being tipped for a challenge for her first Grand Slam.
The 17-year-old had might light work of her opening three matches in not dropping a single set.
But Kerber, who won Wimbledon back in 2018, was going to be Gauff’s toughest test to date.
The match didn’t disappoint early on either with each player breaking serve in the first five games.
Kerber though took the advantage and held on to it in the first set to take an early lead.
Gauff didn’t drop her head though and pushed Kerber hard to try and get back into the match in the second.
However, the three-time Grand Slam champion showed her experience in holding off any threat before getting the all-important break midway through the set.
Gauff was then battling to try and get back in the match with a few opportunities to break back.
Kerber held on though to reach the 11th quarter-final of her career and will be seen as one of the favourites to win Wimbledon now.
