Coronation Street writer hits back at claim

Damon Rochefort, 55, has contributed to Coronation Street scripts since 2004, and shared that he has been grilled over the soap’s plotline by some viewers. The Welsh scriptwriter admitted that Corrie is “selling a fantasy” with its narrative that people can work on the same street they live on.

Damon divulged: “People say, ‘As if anyone would work on the street where they live’.

“Well, of course, they don’t. But the fantasy we’re selling is of a community where people care about each other.

“Even bitter rivals Ken [Barlow] and Mike [Baldwin] had moments when they were sympathetic to one another,” he added to Radio Times.

The soap is now approaching its 60th birthday, and unlike previous years that have seen infernos, train crashes and sieges, this year will be a decidedly more played down affair.

As coronavirus has imposed restrictions on explosive soap storylines, the production team has focused in on making the programme “conversational”.

Producer Ian MacLeod shared: “There was a moment earlier in 2020 when we weren’t able to predict whether we’d hit the anniversary; the plans were slightly in doubt.

“But we’ve just wrapped on it and Christmas is also on course. So I’m in good spirits.”

The production has been scaled back to adhere to strict social distancing guidelines, therefore stunts and filming on location have been scrapped,

The actor recently admitted it was upsetting to see his character Geoff in action, as he won three awards at the Inside Soap Awards.

Many fans have compared his character to former show villain and serial killer Richard Hillman, who was played by Brian Capron back at the beginning of the noughties.

After finally finding the courage to fight back following months of mental and physical abuse, Yasmeen slashed him in the neck.

However, Geoff was undeterred to ruin her reputation, as he began to turn their friends and neighbours against her.

For his evil role in the soap, Ian was awarded gongs Best Actor, Best Villain, and Best Show-Stopper.

In spoilers from tonight’s episode, Geoff is seen clashing with son Tim Metcalfe (Joe Dutt) as tension heats up ahead of Yasmeen’s trial.

Geoff spots Tim in the street and intentionally goads him. He claims that he knew he’d never amount to much even as a child.

Tim falls for Geoff’s plan and therefore punches him in the face, which could see him dismissed as a credible witness in Yasmeen’s court case.
