‘Culture shock’: Employers react to DWP’s job scheme for Universal Credit claimants

“I’m thinking Ethan is going to be one of the main men in the construction industry,” Mr Keys added.
“Ethan finished his Kickstart programme fairly recently and moved into a full-time role. It encourages employers to take people on and give them that first chance.
“The old adage is you need experience to get a job, but how do you get experience if you haven’t got a job. This programme enables people to get that first initial experience and to prove to prospective employers that they can do that job.”
Another employer who has enjoyed his experience getting Universal Credit claimants into work through the job scheme is Damian Meyers, the Managing Director of Clan Contracting.
“With our young people as well, I don’t think they have come through college or university, and they have gotten into an ongoing trap where training providers are just training them for training purposes with no real end game,” he shared.
“They had all done various different Level Ones and Level Twos, but had no end vision of what that job was going to be for them at the end of it.
