La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s upcoming movie, Babylon, has added even more stars to its already impressive cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Babylon has cast Tobey Maguire, Olivia Wilde, Phoebe Tonkin, and Spike Jonze.
The new cast members join Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Katherine Waterson, Samara Weaving, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, Flea, Damon Gupton, and P.J. Byrne. Details regarding the characters played by the cast are being kept under the wraps. Minghella is rumoured to play Irving Thalberg, who was the head of production at MGM in the 1920s and 1930s. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences presents the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers who consistently deliver high quality movie production.
Babylon is set in the late 1920s, where the cinema industry began transitioning from silent movies to talkies. It will explore the rise and fall of multiple fictional and historical characters from that period. The project is described as “The Great Gatsby on steroids.” Chazelle will be writing as well as directing Babylon. Marc Platt, Olivia Hamilton, and Matt Plouffe will be the producers, and Maguire, Helen Estabrook, and Adam Siegel will serve as executive producers.
Babylon will begin filming next week in Los Angeles. Paramount is planning a limited release for Babylon on December 25, 2022 and a wider release on January 6, 2023. More details about the plot and characters of the movie will be revealed in the coming months.
