Diabetes: The sign in your belly button that blood sugar levels are ‘out of control’

Diabetes rates have grown steadily in the past decade, but projections suggest a significant spike could be imminent. The condition is linked to a number of life-threatening ailments, so early detection is key. One sign that blood sugar levels are high may appear in the belly button.

Diabetes can be broken down into two pathologies; either the pancreas is unable to carry out its work properly, or it is unable to produce enough insulin.

This can cause blood sugar levels to spike, causing substantial collateral damage to the body.

There are few clinical symptoms linked to diabetes in the initial stages, but complications are bound to arise if high glucose levels are left unaddressed.

Signs of chronic high blood sugar typically manifest in the arms, legs and eyes, as a result of diabetic neuropathy – nerve damage.

However, one Everyday Health article outlining the signs that blood sugar levels are “out of control” mentions yeast infections.

Candida is a yeast that typically grows in damp, dark areas of the body.

Such infections can occur in the belly button and are characterised by clear or coloured discharge.

Crusty skin, strong odour, itching, and redness are also signs of a navel yeast infection.

If these signs don’t clear up by themselves, you should see a doctor.

While yeast infections are a common occurrence in people who don’t have diabetes, they are more prevalent in individuals with high glucose levels.

“Conditions such as diabetes may put a person at risk of having discharge at certain times,” explains an entry in Medical News Today.

“According to research in the Journal of Paediatric & Adolescent Gynaecology, there appears to be a link between high blood sugar and candida yeast infections.

Some researchers argue that substantial weight loss could boost the chances of reversing the condition.

This is particularly true for individuals with prediabetes – the condition that precedes a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Prediabetes refers to abnormally high blood sugar levels – which can easily be reversed through limiting sugar intake.

Coupled with exercise, a good diet offers the best hope for staving off the condition.
