Durgamati review: This inconsistent Bhumi Pednekar-Arshad Warsi starrer achieves some redemption in its last quarter | Bollywood Life

If you ask the genre of this film, we will call it a khichadi as it is a mixture of drama, love, horror and thriller. Does that matter? Not really. But the way the film progresses for the most part is a test of your patience. Also Read – Mahie Gill: I don’t think I can run a film as a solo actor [Exclusive]
What’s it about
A remake of Telugu-Tamil bilingual film Bhaagamathie, Durgamati begins with mysterious and gruesome killings in a village and the theft of 12 idols in a span of 6 months. Politician Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi) is questioned about the thefts and he promises to solve the case or give up politics. CBI officer Satakshi Ganguly (Mahie Gill) is assigned to solve the case by higher authorities who feel Ishwar has got something to do with it. Satakshi decides to interrogate IAS officer Chanchal Chauhan (Bhumi Pednekar), who was associated with Ishwar and is currently in jail for killing her husband. They take her to a dilapidated and allegedly haunted palace in which resides the ghost of Durgamati. What’s hot
The film begins well and you are invested in the story. Some of the scenes are really scary like the one in which you see a mirror reflection or the one which involves candles. The last 40 minutes or so are decent and they redeem the film to a great extent. Bhumi Pednekar excels in her performance baring a few scenes in which she screams. Arshad Warsi is first-rate. What’s not
The main issue of the film is its clunky middle which is as confusing as it is irritating. There are many similar scenes which add no value and should have been easily trimmed. They make you lose your interest in the proceedings. Durgamati is also too loud in several portions and some of its dialogues just put you off. Most of the horror scenes are not scary enough.
BL Verdict
Durgamati is long, loud, inconsistent and doesn’t have enough in it to keep you involved. Trimming 20 minutes would have made a lot of difference. I’m going with 2.5 out of 5 stars.
