France wildfire rages near Saint Tropez - are holidays affected?

Saint Tropez is a popular holiday destination for many Brits. With France now on the UK’s amber travel list, fully vaccinated Britons can jet off there without the need to quarantine upon their return. But holidaymaker’s plans could be at risk as “fierce” wildfires are raging near this holiday destination.

Thousands have had to be evacuated as wildfire rage near the popular tourist resort of Saint Tropez in the south of France.

The French fire service has sent around 750 firefighters to tackle the blaze today.

Aircraft were deployed to drop water over the fire in a bid to control it.

Challenging weather conditions have made attempts to subdue the blaze difficult.

By this morning the fire had burnt more than 5000 hectares.

Ms Vienco said: “This is the area covered but it is too early to estimate the area burned.”

Which areas are most at risk from the blaze?

The wildfire continues to spread quickly across the southern tourist region of Var.

Many campsites have had to be evacuated in this region.

DON’T MISS:

The Riviera town of Saint-Tropez has yet to be affected but there are fears it could spread to the resort.

The fires have already reached the village of Gonfaron, about 30 miles west of Saint-Tropez.

The village of Le Mole has been evacuated along with some areas around Saint-Tropez.

Areas closer to the coast including La Croix Valmer and Grimaud have been impacted by the fires.

It is difficult to tell if the fire will spread to Saint Tropez as the blaze is moving so fast with French authorities struggling to contain it.

Ms Vienco said: ”The fire is very huge and its spreading at a speed of four kilometres an hour, it’s a very difficult battle.

“During the night we managed to prevent the fire from reaching Garde-Freinet,” a village about 20 kilometres from Saint-Tropez.”

French authorities are urging people to stay away from the blaze.

Although travel to the area hasn’t been banned the French authorities are urging people to stay away from the blaze.

If you are planning to holiday in this area you will need to keep an eye on the updates from the French authorities to make sure it is safe to travel.
