In fact anyone, kids or no kids, can take advantage of today’s freebie of the day, with free film screenings to suit everyone’s taste. Queen lovers should head over to Wembley Park later today Friday (August 20) to watch Bohemian Rapsody. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s the story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid in 1985. Starting at 6pm, it’s likely to get busier earlier if the weather’s nice. It will be screened at the Events Pad, across from the London Designer Outlet on Wembley Park Boulevard.

On Saturday evening, cinema goers can enjoy watching a game of cat and mouse as they relax in front of a showing of Tom & Jerry (2021).

This promises to be a chaotic battle between Jerry Mouse, who has taken refuge in the Royal Gate Hotel, and Tom Cat, who is hired to drive him away before the day of a big wedding arrives.

This will be showing at the same outdoor venue, again at 6pm and families are advised to get there early to ensure a spot.

Weather permitting, it’s also a good idea to pack a picnic to keep costs down and the good news is that there are no restrictions about taking your own food and drink into the area.

Films to watch with the kids during the school holidays:

Beatles fans, and children who have never heard of them, will love Yesterday which is showing the next day on Friday (27 August).

The film follows a struggling musician who realises he’s the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate timeline where they never existed.

Family favourite Paddington will screen the next day (Saturday 28 August) and will no doubt put a smile on everyone’s faces. The children’s film is about a young Peruvian bear who travels to London in search of a home after his ancestors spoke fondly about it.

These free films will be a lifeline to many parents struggling to keep the kids entertained during the school summer holidays.

Although  they are suitable for families, films like Happy Ending and Happy Gilmore could just as easily be enjoyed without little ones in tow.

Happy Ending is a Bollywood classic, which tells the story of a confused writer who goes on the search of inspiration for his next story and falls in love with a best seller author who doesn’t believe in love.

Meanwhile, A Star Is Born (2018) stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the remake of the cult-classic film, in which a musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

The film festival ends with a chance to choose your own 80s movie on Friday 3 September.

Guests are being asked to vote for their favourite out of Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Back to the Future via the Wembley Park website.

For those who don’t live in London, there are also free events happening in other parts of the UK this weekend (21 and 22 August), including a lego event at The Galleries shopping centre in Bristol. Displays will include Star Wars, DC and Marvel and Minecraft.

In Manchester, families who are eligible for free school meals can enrol their children on a free football course that will also include an insight into basic video, photography and commentary on sport broadcasting. It’s a good idea to check eligibility and booking before heading on out via Manchester.gov.uk
