French Open 2021: Casper Ruud crashes out, loses to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five sets thriller (Ruud vs Fokina)- Sixth seed Casper Ruud has lost the five-set thriller against little known Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain. The latter produced a phenomenal performance as he won the last set 7-5 despite losing the fourth set comprehensively.

15th seed Ruud had won the fourth set in style 6-0 against Fokina and the match had entered a thrilling fifth set decider. Earlier, Fokina was back in the game after winning the 3rd set tie-breaker but couldn’t match the Norwegian in the previous set as Ruud claimed the second set after losing the opening set. He dropped just two points in the second set against the Spaniard.

Ruud started trailing Fokina after the opening set of the third round. The match entered a tie-breaker in the first set itself and the Davidovich held his nerves to win it 7-6 (7-3). 

The epic battle lasted for 4 hours and 35 minutes.

French Open: Norway’s Ruud is ranked 6th in the world by ATP while Spain’s Fokina is placed at 46. The Spaniard got to the 3rd round after beating Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 6-4 6-3 and Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-4 6-4 5-7 2-6 6-4. In the 2nd round, Davidovich Fokina had a tough win against Zandschulp to overcome his opponent only in 5 sets.
