Google down: How long will Google be down for?

Google down: How long will Google be down for?

An error alert is coming up for many users which gives a 404 message and says: “The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried.”

The cause of the outage was unclear but users were still able to access the websites’ landing pages in “incognito mode”.

The outage also affected Google-connected smart devices, such as its Home speakers, and had ka nock-on effect on other apps which require users to log in with their Google details.

Google’s search engine, however, remained unaffected by the issue.

Many turned to Twitter – thankfully not owned by Google – to find out what’s going on. One posted: “Realizing that your work greatly relies on @google. On the plus side, NO WORK!!!”

Another said: “When you thought your wifi is down but it was Google.”

A third posted: “Google services are down worldwide. No statement yet.”

Others have made light of the situation, referring to their use the search engine to find out why it’s down with one tweeting: “When you Google why Google is not working#googledown”

Another posted: “The day came. When you can’t even google what happened with google. It’s still 2020.”

A third added: “Was gonna google why Google is down, then I realised.#googledown”

How long will Google be down for?

Google went down across the globe just before midday on December 14. Most reports looked to be concentrated in Europe, as the map above shows.

After about an hour, there were reports of some emails filtering through and Google Docs beginning to respond. However the services are not back for everyone and functions remain intermittent.

Despite the widespread outage, Google’s service dashboard initially reported no errors – though this was later updated to show a red alert.

The service is now showing all services, including Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Chat, Google Calendar and Google Forms, as ‘active’.

Google is yet to tweet to confirm what’s happening with its products.

However, during the outage it’s main Twitter account shared a link to its Google Trends function, with the post: “This year more than ever, people around the world searched for ‘how to thank’ key workers on the front line of the pandemic; from bus drivers, to teachers and doctors.”

Google has been contacted for comment, but one spokesperson told the BBC they were unable to access their email.

The online giant later issued a statement, with the word Gmail being replaced by other products such as Google Docs and YouTube, which said: “We’re aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a majority of users. The affected users are unable to access Gmail.”
