Hair loss treatment: Best treatments to prevent balding recommended by expert
Hair loss is a tricky subject which still baffles healthcare professionals. Dr Knut Moe, medical director for men’s health and hair loss treatment service at Son’s offers his top tips for why hair loss occurs and what treatments could help.
When asked what causes hair loss, Dr Moe said: “Male pattern hair loss is caused by a genetically inherited susceptibility to dihydrotestosterone (DHT for short).
“At some point in a man’s life, DHT starts to exert an effect on hair follicles, typically starting at the temples or sometimes the crown and starts to cause hairs to miniaturise and, eventually, die off.
“This can happen differently in different men in that some people will start to shed slowly in their 40s, 50s, and 60s in an age-appropriate manner, whereas others can shed hair at a much earlier age and at an alarming rate.”

When it comes to why some men are more susceptible to hair loss than others, Dr Moe discussed how the process is very a much a genetic one.
He said similarly, if all males in the family had lost their hair at a young age, then it is a logical assumption that you will suffer a similar fate.
“It is believed that it is down to the expression of the genes causing hair loss that dictates how susceptible you have to hair loss and how quickly it might occur,” he added.
How to combat hair loss
Dr Moe listed the important habits one should adopt to help increase hair growth which include:
“Our hairs are made from Keratin, a protein produced in the body, “Dr Moe explained.
“Coupled with healthy blood flow and nutrients, the body needs these core ingredients to produce healthy hair.
“As such, it’s important to look after your diet, hydration and exercise levels and to stay fit and active.
“Whilst we cannot prevent someone from getting male pattern hair loss, good self-care in terms of diet, exercise, and looking after yourself mentally can certainly help.”

Stress can play an important part in hair growth and interestingly there have been increased reports of male pattern hair loss a few months after Covid.
Dr Moe continued: “Certainly, we know that hair loss can accelerate during periods of stress and causes a phenomenon known as ‘shock loss’.
“In an age of increasing social media, pictures being posted online of ourselves during nights out etc, it’s difficult to avoid seeing images of ourselves regularly.
“Throw in a few ‘helpful’ comments from friends advising that we’re getting a little light on top and it’s easy to get self-conscious.
“On top of that, there are many who genuinely suffer with anxiety, and sometimes that anxiety can manifest itself as anxiety over appearance.”
It’s also important to note that there is no cure for male pattern hair loss, though there are effective medical treatments, such as Sons 1mg Finasteride and 5 percent Minoxidil scalp application, advised Dr Moe.
“These are treatments that are effective in 90 percent of men at halting hair loss and that give hair regrowth in over 60 percent of men who take them,” he explained.
“In terms of other treatments that can help with quality of hair, the vitamin biotin has been shown to help with the quality of hair and hair growth.
“Sons’ Saw Palmetto shampoo can also help with hair quality.”
Asked what other effective treatments could help combat hair loss, Dr Moe suggested: “There are lots and lots of treatments out there that report to treat male pattern hair loss.
“The reality is there are few that are scientifically proven to treat hair loss.
“Medication such as Finasteride and Minoxidil are still the most effective treatments for male pattern hair loss and are proven to halt hair loss in 90 percent and increase hair quantity in 60 percent of men.
“In terms of quality of hair and hair growth, Biotin supplementation has been shown to increase rate of hair growth and improve hair quality and a shampoo rich in nutrients for hair growth can help also.
“The important thing when it comes to hair loss is to seek advice/treatment early – if it is something that you think you would want to treat, then seek out medical advice with your GP or hair treatment specialists such as Sons.
“There’s plenty of effective treatments out there but they are more effective at holding on to hair loss rather than regaining hair that you’ve already lost, so don’t delay.”
