Here’s How One Indian Retailer Stopped PS5 Restock Cancellations
With the fourth wave of PS5 India restocks, multiple stores in the country have been unable to cope with demand, cancelling orders en-masse. Most recently we’ve seen Reliance Digital and Croma do this as well as Flipkart. All of them had taken orders for the PS5 only to cancel them days later. One exception to this, seems to be Vijay Sales.
Headquartered in Mumbai, the electronics chain appeared to be an odd addition to the list of retailers selling the PS5 in India at the time. After all, it is associated with appliances rather than video games. Nonetheless, the company has surprised gamers in the country with prompt PS5 restocks.
More importantly, from our experience and through IGN India reader feedback, Vijay Sales hasn’t had to resort to cancelling PS5 orders after they were placed. We wondered how it was able to avoid this where other, bigger stores have failed.
According to Nilesh Gupta, Director at Vijay Sales, the company sticks to the tried and tested principle of under promising and over delivering by ensuring that it keeps a buffer of PS5 stocks to prevent over bookings and other unforseen consequences.
“So for example, if we get 100, we just put 80 on sale and leave 20 for buffer because we’ll have some issue or something,” Gupta tells IGN India. “Some places where two people would have booked [the same unit] or something would have happened, we cannot let that happen.”
Gupta goes onto explain how the company views its PS5 audience. He appears to be all too aware of the hype surrounding it Vijay Sales’ role in making it available.
“If people are so crazy about PS5 and are able to book it online and after 10 minutes you send them a mail saying ‘sorry, it’s a mistake, we can’t do it’, what you feel is ‘had Vijay Sales not confirmed I would have gone to Amazon or Flipkart or anybody else and got it, because Vijay Sales confirmed, I didn’t try’,” he explains. “It’s a different story that at that moment in time you wouldn’t have got it anywhere else, but you’re going to keep that in your mind and think ‘boss next time I’m not going to Vijay Sales, they’ve let me down’. “
Gupta’s comments give insight into how Vijay Sales seems to differ from the competition, many of whom appear to have had a more aggressive approach to selling the PS5 all while leaving customers feeling disappointed, which seems to be a recurring theme.
IGN India spoke to Gupta at length regarding Vijay Sales’ approach to gaming which goes beyond the PS5 as well as what to expect from the company in the space going forward. Stay tuned to our full interview this week.
