Travel plans being considered by the Government would enable fully vaccinated people to travel to dozens more holiday hotspots, including some of Brits’ favourite destinations, without the need for quarantine on the way back home. However, fully vaccinated travellers could still face numerous restrictions when they touch down in the other country, as some amber list destinations aren’t accepting visitors from the UK, or require them to quarantine in a hotel for days following their arrival.

Almost 170 countries are on the amber list currently, including Spain, France and Italy.

The Government currently advises Brits not to travel to places on the amber list, though an overhaul of travel rules is expected on Thursday.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Hancock revealed ministers are looking at how to scrap the requirement for people to isolate for 10 days on return from amber list places.

Mr Hancock said he is “in favour of moving forward in this area” and replacing quarantine measures with daily testing.

The Health Secretary said: “This has not been clinically advised yet – we are working on it.

“We’re working on plans to essentially allow the vaccine to bring back some of the freedoms that have had to be restricted to keep people safe.

“After all, that is the whole purpose of the vaccination programme, that’s why it is so important that every adult goes out and gets the jab.”

Asked whether these plans could be in place for this summer, he said the Government would implement “when it’s safe to do so”.

What are the current rules for amber list countries?

People who have been in an amber country or territory in the 10 days before they arrive in England face numerous rules.

Before getting to England, they have to take a Covid test, book and pay for day two and day eight Covid travel tests to be taken after their arrival and complete a passenger locator form.

Upon arrival in England, they have to quarantine at home or in a designated hotel for 10 days and take a Covid test on or before day two and on or after day eight.

They could be allowed to leave quarantine early if they pay for a private test through the Test to Release scheme.

Children aged four and under are not required to take the day two or day eight tests.

Spain, France, Italy and the US are the top four most visited countries by UK residents, with tens of millions of Brits going to these destinations every year pre-pandemic.

People will be glad to see the quarantine scrapped for fully vaccinated individuals, as this will enable freer travel.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely disrupted international travel, essentially bringing it to a standstill for the first time since it became a mainstream concept.
