Implant side effects: How effective is the implant? Does it cause weight gain?

The implant releases the hormone progestogen into your bloodstream, which prevents the release of an egg each month.

On top of stopping you from ovulating, the implant thickens the cervical mucus which makes it more difficult for sperm to move through the cervix.

The implant also thins the womb so if an egg is released and fertilised by mistake, it is still unlikely to implant itself on the lining of the womb.

The progesterone-only methods are the implant, the injectable and the progesterone-only pill.

Dr Lee said: “Progesterone-only methods are all in the same group because none of them contain estrogen.

“These are very safe methods to use, and there are very few women who cannot use them. You can breastfeed with all three.

“They work as contraceptives because they interfere with the process of ovulation or they prevent ovulation completely.”

Women often prefer the idea of taking a pill as it seems less permanent, but non-LARC methods are not as reliable.

This is because you may forget to take your pill, whereas a LARC method stays in place for a long period of time.
