MUMBAI: All-rounder Washington Sundar and pacer Avesh Khan have joined opener Shubman Gill in the list of players who have been ruled out for the five-Test series between England and India starting August 4.
Both Sundar and Khan have been ruled out due to finger injuries. Sundar has a finger injury, the details of which are yet to be ascertained, while Khan has fractured his finger. Both cricketers will not be available on the tour any further.
Gill had been ruled out two weeks ago due to shin splints and has already returned home.
Sundar and Khan played for the Combined County XI against the Indian team in the warm-up game in Durham. TOI understands that the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spoke to the BCCI about their inability to put in place a squad of 11 players, following which the Indian board agreed to the arrangement of two India players playing for the combined county team.
It is now to be seen what BCCI will do post these injuries. The Board had said a categorical “no” for a replacement sought by the team post Gill’s injury. Now, with Khan – a good fast-bowling prospect, and Sundar – a blooming all-rounder who’s shown the knack for some serious batting in Test cricket, both being ruled out, the selectors will have to get into a huddle and chalk the way forward.
The 24-member squad set to England is now down to 21 and those tracking developments say, “with Covid numbers rising, who knows what’s in store?”
Should any member of the team test positive – regardless of whether he turns out to be asymptomatic or otherwise – the player and those he came in contact with will have to be quarantined, like it happened in the case of wicket-keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.
Pant joined the team in Durham on Wednesday after finishing his quarantine in London.
“He was asymptomatic and absolutely fine. But the protocols are very clear. So, what happens if a scenario like England (players testing positive during series against Sri Lanka) repeats itself in the Team India camp? Where does the team get replacements from?”
The BCCI will have to act fast in case they begin contemplating whether these replacements have to be sent. Anything they decide will eventually have an effect on the squad that’s playing the white-ball series in Sri Lanka at the moment.
