Inheritance tax increase warning amid Rishi Sunak

Inheritance tax increase warning amid Rishi Sunak

The Chancellor commissioned a Government review which looked at ways he could try to raise funds to help the country’s economy recover. The UK has slipped into a “double-dip” recession this month after Prime Minister Boris Johnson set stricter measures in a bid to lower cases. One cause for encouragement is the incoming vaccines, which have boosted business optimism. But monthly IHS Markit data shows that the PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) has dipped below 50, suggesting the UK economy is contracting rather than growing.

Mr Sunak announced some plans in his Spending Review last week, such as cuts to foreign aid and and a pay freeze for public sector workers in 2021-2022.

But the announcement was lacking detail on taxation, with some fearing hikes could be around the corner.

The Government review, published this month and commissioned by Mr Sunak, suggested inheritance tax could be affected.

Some believe a hike could be inevitable as Mr Sunak looks to pay for the costs of the pandemic.

The report suggested that the maximum capital gains tax rate of 28 percent could be moved closer to top income tax rates in England and Wales (40 percent and 45 percent).

The proposals could also target profit shares investors can make tax-free, with other adjustments potentially hiking inheritance tax bills.

The concern regarding the UK economy is palpable as the national debt rises to more than £2trillion.

The budget deficit – the annual shortfall between spending and tax income – is expected to rise to reach more than £400billion this year.

The Office of Tax Simplification published the report, and laid out plans for a “£14billion tax raid” by the Chancellor.

The OTS said: “A rough static costing suggests that alignment of CGT rates with income tax rates could theoretically raise an additional £14bn a year for the exchequer.”

He told Express.co.uk that Mr Sunak has been complacent during the pandemic.

He added that the Chancellor’s “star is over” as he warned of dire levels of unemployment.

Mr Murphy said: “Rishi Sunak’s star is definitely over. His rising star, his moment of glory in August, is done.

“The Eat Out to Help Out scheme has clearly backfired, this will be enough to basically kill his chances of ever becoming Prime Minister.

“I also have absolutely no doubt his job support scheme will backfire on him too.”
