I have to confess I love the Gucci backgammon set; I can imagine whiling away an evening with a loved one playing backgammon, glancing up at the view from time to time, and sipping on a cocktail,” adds Arnold.

And while the more traditional decorative elements take centerstage, there are some modern surprises. You really don’t ever have to leave your suite for supper – a personal butler is on hand to cater to your every whim. Multi-tiered stands of that most beloved of British traditions, afternoon tea, can be delivered to you, as can a Hanky Panky Highball – in fact, the mixologist will come along to shake it up right in front of you. However, it’d be a shame not to head down to the Savoy Grill for its classy comfort food, or to the seafood-starring River Restaurant, where, on a recent night, I tucked into a truly excellent taramasalata, the chef’s selection of oysters, and barbecue aubergine.

Of course, making the best use of your time inside the suite probably involves inviting your friends over for a cocktail or few. It’d be a shame not to share all that space, should you find yourself in it.
