Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company which has spent months developing a COVID-19 vaccine, announced in preliminary results today its early samples have produced a 90 percent effectiveness rate. The news gives people across the world a tangible “way out” of the current limitations, but it may take some time for everyone to receive a dose. The company will likely roll out the vaccine to people in its own country first as a matter of proximity.

Boris Johnson hailed developments made by Pfizer in his briefing from Downing Street today, questioning whether it may signal the “beginning of the end” of the pandemic.

But, although Britain has made advancements on its own vaccine, Pfizer’s is not a local achievement.

The company is, in fact, American, and one of several currently pursuing a potential cure for COVID-19.
