James Gunn Says Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Be Emotionally Heavy

The two Guardians of the Galaxy movies so far have been characterized by their light and breezy nature, with the dysfunctional titular team throwing all sorts of barbs, quips and one-liners at each other, but still displaying a sense of unity, togetherness and family that would even make Dominic Toretto blush.

That’s not to say the duology hasn’t been without emotion, when audiences were wiping away tears at the end of the first installment when Groot made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the rest of the crew, while the sequel broke Star-Lord’s heart when Ego revealed what had actually caused his mother’s death, the single defining event of his entire life and existence.

Production on Vol. 3 is gearing up to kick off before the end of the year, and in a new interview James Gunn revealed that the script is going to be the heaviest one yet from an emotional perspective.

“For Guardians 3, the script has basically been written for a long time. I’ve been playing with it in little ways over the years, but it’s basically stayed the same since three years ago. It’s pretty heavy actually. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”

Plot details are still under wraps at this stage, but we could have a much better idea of where things are heading once Thor: Love and Thunder arrives next year, with the Guardians set to play a key supporting role. The Disney Plus Holiday Special is shaping up to be an extravaganza of irreverence, but it sounds as though Gunn is keeping the focus on the heart of the story as he prepares to draw the trilogy to a close.

Dave Bautista is definitely calling it quits after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Gunn might end his time at the helm as well, so it promises to be an emotional roller-coaster in more ways than one when the cosmic misfits finally headline their third solo movie in May 2023, six years after the second chapter.
