Kirsten Dunst admits she avoided spending time with Benedict Cumberbatch on Netflix set

Kirsten Dunst, 39, and Benedict Cumberbatch, 45, have both recently spoken out about avoiding each other on set of their new Western film The Power of the Dog, which lands on Netflix next month. The pair decided to remain in character the entire time and refused to speak to each other, even when they had finished filming for the day.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding the film, what with the all-star cast and moody cinematography.

The story centres around a domineering rancher’s reaction to his brother bringing home a new wife and her son, telling the subtle tale of jealousy, rage, and sexuality.

Cumberbatch plays gruff cowboy Phil Burbank, who has a strained relationship with his brother George’s (Jesse Plemons) wife Rose Gordon (Dunst).

This is the main reason why the pair decided to stay away from each other while filming, so as to capture the real essence of their character’s tension.

The pair truly went full method for their roles, with Cumberbatch not washing during filming, refusing to answer to ‘Benedict’, and smoking rolled cigarettes with no filter throughout the days on-set.

The Power of The Dog is out on 1st December, a miracle for director Jane Campion, who believed Covid had brought a sharp end to the film once and for all.

Restrictions on transatlantic travel almost derailed the movie completely, as it was shut down halfway through production.

Dunst admitted that “Jane was crying”, when she had to inform the cast and crew.

“I mean, I think she thought that was it, we were done,” she recalled.

“[That] we would never come back to make this movie.”

But it’s almost here and it’s set to be a good’n.
