Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani opens up on Marcelo Bielsa and how long he may stay as boss
Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has revealed he hopes Marcelo Bielsa has a long career at Elland Road – despite the fact the manager is already 65. Bielsa took the hotseat in 2018 and led them into the Premier League last season, in his second campaign at the helm.
Leeds were beaten 4-1 at home to Leicester City on Monday night, but they have made a decent start to their first top-flight campaign in 16 years, featuring victories over Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Fulham, a draw against Manchester City and narrow defeats to Liverpool and Wolves.
The Argentine’s arrival at Leeds was something of a coup after he achieved cult status as head coach of Chile, leading the South American nation to the 2010 World Cup finals with an attacking style and a focus on fast-tracking young talent.
Bielsa has been described by Pep Guardiola as “the best” manager, and he has had a colourful spell in charge of Leeds, turning them into promotion candidates and ending their long absence from the top flight by winning the Championship.
He has also courting controversy along the way – his first season in charge was notable not only for a play-off charge but also for the ‘Spygate’ saga, when Bielsa admitted sending a ‘spy’ to Derby County’s training ground ahead of a game against the Rams.

“But we like to decide year by year because obviously as I said in another interview he’s not a young manager, he’s 65 and his family, his wife is often in Argentina.
“Hopefully he can stay longer – 60 is the new 40 these days!
“If not, I think what he’s building is the foundation for a proper club.
“I say that really convinced of his job, because it’s not only what you can see every game, but what he has done in terms of changing the facilities, the work ethic – they really reflect what I wanted to do in the club so I’m very pleased with his job.”
