Lewis Hamilton could receive a major boost next month, as Silverstone circuit hopes to host the largest outdoor gathering in the UK since March 2020, amid reports the UK government could extend Coronavirus restrictions.

Hamilton has won seven times around the iconic Silverstone circuit, and is used to being cheered on by a sea of Union Jack flags, and has been seen crowd-surfing after the races too, with thousands of enthusiastic F1 fans.

However, last year was a very different scene as the two Silverstone races, the British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, were held behind closed doors at the Northampton circuit last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of pounds lost in revenue and the usually bursting grandstands left empty.

But, according to Telegraph Sport, talks have started regarding the possibility of running the event at full capacity, if Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces a delay to ‘freedom day’ until July 19.

It comes as the UK government is reportedly looking to extend COVID-19 restrictions for an extra four weeks across the country, unable to commit to June 21 as originally planned, impacting the F1 event which is due to take place 16-18 July.

But the Telegraph’s report claims a potential exemption would be possible due to the size of the site at Silverstone, which at 550 acres is the largest outdoor sporting venue in the country and the fact many fans would drive to the event, rather than use public transport.

Silverstone has been selling tickets on the basis of being at capacity and is already almost completely sold out.

Hamilton often spoke about the absence of fans last season and said Silverstone especially was like “night and day” without them.

“With Silverstone, there is just nothing like it. It is the highlight of my season because the support is insane,” he said.
