Lewis Hamilton's father 'fought' when star was 'abused in racing' amid BLM row

He also alleged that Hamilton’s actions could be seen as “polarising”.

Hamilton has routinely been attacked by figures for his political stance, but he has maintained his position as a supporter of the movement.

But in a throwback report, Hamilton opened up on his decision to take a stand, alongside the likes of boxer Anthony Joshua, and help their cause.

During a Puma discussion in August, with iconic American star Tommie Smith, and football legend Thierry Henry, Hamilton discussed the impact his father had on him.

He said: “When I was going races, when I was a kid, we were the only black people on the race scene.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen ‘Cool Runnings’ – but that’s like my favourite movie – and there’s a scene where they arrive at the top of the hill and I don’t think they’ve ever seen black people up there before.

“That’s how it always was when me and my Dad, particularly when we first started – that was how we felt.

“But I was always fortunate that I could lean back on my Dad, and when people ask me who is my hero, there are those that have laid the bridges for me.

But some have been critical of decisions to carry out such support, with one claiming sport shouldn’t mix with political groups or organisations.

Schumacher is supportive of Hamilton’s views, telling Sport1 that “his values are very important and he can represent them on social networks”, but he felt taking them into racing was a step too far.

He added: “The only question is why he always has to do it in a Mercedes suit and on the racetrack.

“It can be too polarising. If the drivers rush into things like that too much it is dangerous – the sport doesn’t deserve that.”
