Man Utd and Edinson Cavani release statements after star sparked racism storm on Instagram

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has apologised for a now-deleted Instagram post which sparked a racism storm on Sunday. Cavani is facing an investigation by the Football Association over the post in question. Following Sunday’s win over Southampton, the former Paris Saint-Germain star used the Spanish term ‘negrito’, which translates as ‘black’, when replying to a message of congratulations on Instagram.
Cavani deleted the message when he was made aware of how it could be interpreted.
The 33-year-old insists the last thing he wanted to do was cause any offence with the post.
In a statement published on the official United website, Cavani said: “The message I posted after the match on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game.
“The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone.
