Man Utd weak link becomes clear after PSG Champions League defeat

Manchester United fell to a 3-1 defeat to PSG in their Champions League clash at Old Trafford. Goals from Neymar (x2) and Marquinhos gave the Ligue 1 giants all three points, with Marcus Rashford on target for the hosts. Express Sport will now take a look at four things we learned from the match.

Martial becoming weak link

Manchester United have given Anthony Martial chances aplenty to return to form this season.

But it seems the France international is becoming something of a weak link in their attack, with the forward struggling against PSG.

Martial did precious little of note for the most part, a nice pass to Edinson Cavani aside.

But he did squander a huge chance to score, firing over the bar after good work from Marcus Rashford and Cavani in the build-up.

Martial has scored just twice from open play this term. It may be time to take him out of the firing line for him to refocus based on this evidence.

Solskjaer got it wrong

Fred was lucky to stay on the pitch after a headbutt in the first half.

From that moment on he seemed a red card waiting to happen and, with 20 odd minutes left on the clock, he received his marching orders.

And Solskjaer got it wrong.

He should have hooked the Samba star at half time but, instead, let him play on.

United never looked likely to get anything from the game from that moment onwards.

United still need a dictator

United still need a midfield dictator if they’re to kick on and win trophies.

And they certainly don’t have that at present.

Bruno Fernandes is a spark, but he doesn’t dictate the tempo. Neither does McTominay, and neither does Fred.

Years ago the club have a deal for Toni Kroos lined up and a player of that ilk would take them to the next level.

PSG were classier in possession and had more style to them. United have a variety of different midfielders, but still nobody who can run the game.
