Manchester United are concerned about potentially stifling Mason Greenwood as they look to improve the youngster in training, according to reports. The England international has found the net just once from 17 Premier League matches this term. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff are delighted with his contribution so far this term.

Greenwood scored 17 goals for United across all competitions last season, helping the club finish third in the Premier League table.

But the England international has struggled for consistency ever since, with one top flight goal not good enough at present.

There have been positive signs of life in recent weeks, however, with Greenwood starting to look more like his usual self.

And The Athletic say that, behind the scenes, United are working on the 19-year-old.

It’s claimed they’re sharpening him up in training, working to get him to score more goals at the near post.

“I think the last few games, if you look at him closely – yeah, I know we scored nine against Southampton – but if you look at his performance, I thought his performance was top.

“He’s improved and matured immensely, and he’s working with some of the top forwards in the country, of course.

“He’s learning off them, and it’s exciting to see that he’s come over his blip and is playing really well.”

Greenwood was withdrawn in United’s 1-0 FA Cup win over West Ham on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with Scott McTominay scoring the only goal of the game.

And Solskjaer revealed after the victory that United were keen to manage Greenwood’s game time.

“Mason did really well,” said the 47-year-old.

“He played well. We’re managing his minutes.

“He’s played the last three now from the start and Anthony played a game the other week and didn’t play the last game, so we wanted him to complete the game.

“Marcus, we wanted to keep him for the counter threats, the pace. Mason was really positive night.”

It took United 120 minutes to see off the Hammers – but that didn’t bother Solskjaer, who sees it as a positive.

“I think those extra minutes might just give us a boost for our fitness,” the Norwegian added.

“The players saw the game out really well, we are getting stronger and fitter, so of course you’d like to win in 90 minutes.

“And when it happened to be like this, to go straight to pens wouldn’t be the right thing.

“Going through is always the main thing in the cup and, for us, bouncing back was important after the last kick of the ball the other day [against Everton ]. So very pleased with the mentality, the attitude and we were positive about going through.”
