MCU Prequels are Possible for More Characters After Black Widow, Says Kevin Feige

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has hinted that more prequel movies like Black Widow could be “in the cards” for other MCU characters.

According to SlashFilm, Feige commented on the prospect of other Marvel characters getting their own prequel and spinoff movies while speaking at a recent press conference, where he reflected on Scarlett Johansson’s solo Black Widow movie, which is set to simultaneously debut in theaters and through Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9.

“Certainly this film and this story is a particular case for Natasha,” Feige said, emphasizing Natasha Romanoff’s suitability for an MCU origin story. “But the notion of exploring the past, present, and future of the MCU is certainly in the cards for all of our characters. This particular story of this particular cast is very personal, very specific to Natasha.”

Taking place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, when Natasha was a wanted fugitive, the perpetually delayed Black Widow movie will now finally give the Avenger her posthumous due, with a story that deals with Natasha’s history as a spy and assassin, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“We never intended on doing an origin story,” Johansson previously revealed about her character’s solo outing. “I just didn’t want to go back. I wanted to kind of move forward — even though we are going back! But it all makes sense when you see it. It felt like a good time because Natasha has always been a part of some operation… She’s always been an operative and she’s actually never really had to, for better or worse, make any decisions for herself.”

“She’s part of this greater whole, and whether it was the Red Room or S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Avengers, she’s had this kind of family. And then after Civil War, it’s all gone. And she’s, for the first time ever, really just on her own,” Johansson explained further. “She could totally disappear into the ether, and probably that would be that. She doesn’t have to return to anything, which is a pretty terrifying place to be.”

Black Widow will be the first MCU movie in Phase 4. It will be followed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in September, Eternals in November, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December. After that, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the next movie to appear on the MCU Phase 4 slate, serving as the first Marvel flick of 2022.
