Mercedes Benz India logs 65% growth during Jan to June of 2021, sales back to pre-Covid levels
The maker of S-Class expects to end 2021 with a strong double-digit growth with the first half registering a healthy growth of 65%. The company delivered 4857 new cars during January to June of 2021 on the back of strong quarter one sales and healthy recovery in sentiment in Q2 post second wave.
This growth is however on a low base of 2948 units from January to June of 2020 which was severely hit by Covid wave 1. Yet the first half of both 2020 and 2021 had witnessed a two-months of sales disruption on account of lockdown.
The June 2021 retail, in particular, signifies the first sign of a strong recovery in customer sentiments influenced by factors like new product portfolio and gradual unlocking of markets leading to an uptick in economic activities, claimed the company in a statement.
Santosh Iyer, VP Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India told ET the performance in the first half of 2021 is good and the sentiment is much better than last year. “On the demand side, we are back to normal. The monthly sales in June were back to pre-covid levels and we expect this positive sentiment to sustain and the demand in the second half to remain strong.”
If at all, there is a risk on the supply side, with the shortage of semiconductor chips and challenges of the supply chain in sourcing more kits. The company is sitting on a strong order book with a waiting period running into 2-3 months.

Even in the top end cars – the GLS Maybach 600, New S-Class along with AMGs were, in particular, high demand
While the lockdown had impacted physical bookings and deliveries, the Online sales prominence which already accounts for 20% of the overall sales, witnessed a rise in online bookings during the lockdown month of April and May, where the online booking penetration touched 35% of the total monthly sales in April and May.
The company was able to generate more than 25000+ leads in H1 2021 and the company also witnessed a 5% growth in Jan-June 2021 in the lifestyle accessories store, with 700+ orders fulfilled.
