Michael Palin admits feeling ‘vulnerable’ after heart surgery as he talks BBC concerns

Monty Python star Sir Michael Palin, 77, underwent heart surgery last year after discovering a problem with his mitral valve. Post-surgery, the actor discussed life after the operation and working on his latest venture with the BBC, which he admitted sparked concerns.

He revealed: “I had heart surgery last September and was told to have rest and recuperation – then lockdown came along.

“I accepted it rather happily, it’s been like a huge doctor’s note.

“Anyway, coming home has always been the best part of the process.

“We live near Hampstead Heath in London and near friends.”

Michael was recently seen on screens again for his BBC series Michael Palin: Travels of a Lifetime, which looked back at over 30 years of his TV travels.

Following the success of the show, Michael will return to screens once more for bonus 90-minute Christmas special, Himalaya: Journey of a Lifetime.

After filming, the actor discussed the strict regulations in place to put the show together.

When asked if BBC producers were afraid to potentially put him at risk after his life-saving operation, he laughed: “Oh yes!

Recalling some of his past travelling trips on the show, the actor admitted he wished he was still the same person.

“I suppose for a long time, I felt I was 27, until suddenly I was 76, the heart problem came along and I felt older and vulnerable,” he continued.

Despite undergoing such surgery, Michael said he was not worried about the process as he had “implicit faith in the team”.

However, he admitted it does make him “think about vulnerability” and how he works in projects.

“You’ve got to look after it, like your kettle,” he added.

Michael Palin: Travels of a Lifetime is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Himalaya: Journey of a Lifetime airs Sunday 20 December on BBC Two at 8pm.
