Modi Government eye 6G development in India; sets up multiple task forces – Smartprix

The Department of Telecommunications on Thursday, formed 6 task forces under the Technology Innovation Group (TIG) on sixth-generation or 6G technology, making industry representation symbolic.

A notification has been released, dated December 30, which has confirmed the immediate deliverables by March 31, 2022. The deliverables include mapping of 6G activities and capabilities worldwide, and a white paper on India’s competencies, including research and pre-standardization activities.

The new task groups are headed by Bhaskar Ramamurthy (director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Chennai), Abhay Karandikar (director IIT Kanpur), Bharadwaj Amrutur (director Indian Institute of Science Bangalore), Kiran Kumar Kuchi (director, IIT Hyderabad) on multi-platform for next-gen networks, spectrum policy, multi-disciplinary innovative solutions, and devices respectively.

Group for financing research and development is headed by Ashok Kumar Tiwari, Member (Technology), Digital Communications Commission, and a task force on international standards is headed by NG Subramaniam, chairman of the Telecommunications Standards Development Society India.

The department has empowered the chairpersons of newly created task forces to rope in global experts for mentorship whenever necessary. “With a strong emphasis on technology commercialization, the work will encompass the full lifecycle of research and development, manufacturing, pre-standardization, and market readiness,” the department said in its memorandum.

It was only last month that the government formed a 22 member innovation group headed by K Rajaraman, telecom secretary to create a vision for the 6G roadmap development in the country.

“6G will continue to use the multilayer frequency band approach adopted in 5G,” the memorandum said also adding the mm wave band to be deployed for integrated sensing and communications applications, and spectrum bandwidth required could be 500MHz to multiple GHz per operator.

The task forces include officials from the Defence Ministry, Electronics and IT Ministry, Science and Technology Department, ISRO Organization, DRDO, Centre for Development of Telematics, Telecommunications Engineering Centre, and Bharat Electronics Limited.
