Mookuthi Amman review: RJ Balaji and Nayanthara shine in this entertaining but predictable film | Bollywood Life

The genre of Amman movies has been a popular one in Tamil Nadu. However, they are not popular any more. RJ Balaji and NJ Saravanan’s Mookuthi Amman is a social satire cum spoof. In the film, Nayanthara plays the deity Mookuthi Amman, and boy she looks like a Goddess in every frame. The film is set in Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu. Is it a movie about a Goddess joining hands with a bumbling innocent to bash up the bad guys? Well, at some level, it is but it packs in a lot more. What is it about…
Engels Ramasamy (RJ Balaji) is a small-town reporter who focuses on the 11,000 acres of land that his village risks losing to corporates, swamis and businessmen. His domestic life is anything but hunky dory. The eldest of four siblings, he struggles to make ends meet and provide for his family. Though his name is influenced by two rationalists, he is a deeply religious person. In a bid to propitiate the family deity, he goes to the neglected temple of Mookhuti Amman. He prays whole-heartedly and she comes in front of him. What happens thereafter is what the plot is all about. What’s hot..
RJ Balaji is a solid package of entertainment. The actor excels in all the comedy scenes. Nayanthara dazzles like a Goddess on screen and is a scene-stealer. The chemistry between the two is good. Urvashi as Engels’ mother is terrific. Her comic timing is superb. RJ Balaji has written some of the dialogues and screenplay for the film. It has some spoof moments that will make you laugh. There is one reference of hair colour, which is particularly hilarious. It also makes a point on how homemakers slog away without appreciation, and Godmen build empires to support miscreants in society. Nayanthara as Mookuthi Amman does not take herself seriously, and everything happens at a breezy pace. What’s not…
The film is a spoof for the greater period of its run-time. But it does raise some serious issues starting from fear of conversion to inter-religious marriages. All of them are done with humour. This kind of weakens the impact.
