Most ‘incredible’ destinations to discover in 2022 named – and some are in the UK

In the period April-June 2021, UK citizens made 95 percent less trips by plane than the same period in 2019. So there is no doubt about it: everyone needs a holiday in 2022. The National Geographic list gives holidaymakers options for intercontinental holidays and staycations.

National Geographic explained: “Fresh from an exciting £30 million revamp, the 400-year-old Nottingham Castle has thrown open its sturdy wooden gates again and is bigger than and better than ever.”

They added: “The highlight is a permanent new exhibition dedicated to Robin Hood and his fellow Nottingham rebels.”

This looks like it will be a hit for kids in 2022, with its focus on “interactive fun”, complete with “storytelling and ballads” and “longbow-firing, digital archery competitions and sparring with Little John in the beautifully designed gaming spaces”.

Children can also explore caves and “vast grounds”.

Parents and guardians should keep an eye out for this destination over the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays, as “seasonal events” are promised.

If the family doesn’t fancy robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, they can check out Hadrian’s Wall, which crosses Northumberland, Cumbria and Tyne & Wear.

DON’T MISS

This UNESCO-listed structure will be home to a year-long party in 2022 to celebrate its 1,900th birthday.

There will be “live outdoor performances, historic reenactments, sunset music sessions, an illuminated garden, thought-provoking outdoor art installations, compelling talks, and even a Roman Big Birthday Bash.”

What’s not to love?

Nottingham Castle and Hadrian’s Wall have both undergone £30million worth of renovation.

Kent was named one of the best places to discover nature.

Tom Gibbs and Donovan Wright, the UK’s first bison rangers, have “an exciting task ahead” in 2022: four European bison are being reintroduced, once hunted to extinction in Britain thousands of years ago.

If you’d rather hop on a plane than a train in 2022, these are for you.

According to the National Geographic, the best places abroad to discover nature are Belize, Northern Minnesota, Namibia, Russia’s Lake Baikal, and Victoria, Australia.

For unmissable cultural experiences, Atlanta, Georgia; Hokkaido, Japan; Procida, Italy; Jingmai Mountain, Yunnan, China; Oslo, Norway; Rome, Italy and Cairo, Egypt.

Adventurers should check out New Brunswick, Canada; Costa Rica; River Seine, France; Arapahoe Basin, Colorado; Palau; Taghazout, Morocco and Peru.

Sustainability seekers would enjoy a trip to Chimanimani National Park, Mozambique; Columbia River Gorge, Oregon/Washington; Ruhr Valley, Germany; Yasuní National Park, Ecuador; Łódź, Poland; Adelaide, Australia and Grenoble, France.

Families should head to the Danube River; Eastern Shore, Maryland; Bonaire; Granada, Spain, or Lycia, Turkey.

“The pandemic may have changed when, where, and how we travel, but there’s no doubt that we’re excited to pack our bags and hit the road again.”
