MSC Softball Opening Round Day One Recap

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –The Mid-South Conference Softball Opening Round began on Thursday.
Campbellsville (Ky.) and Tennessee Southern swept its doubleheaders on Thursday in the best-of-three series to advance to the tournament final site. Georgetown took game one against Cumberlands and Lindsey Wilson won game one against Thomas More.
Campbellsville vs. Pikeville
The second-seeded Tigers (34-14) took game one over the No. 11 seed Bears (14-35) 11-1 in five innings. Campbellsville tallied 11 hits while limiting Pikeville to just three in the game. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Campbellsville then added a run in the second inning and three runs in the third. Pikeville got on the board in the top half of the fifth before Campbellsville scored five in the bottom of the inning for the 11-1 victory.
Campbellsville won the second game 11-3 in six innings. The Tigers led 7-0 after the first three innings. The Tigers led 9-3 after the fifth inning and scored two runs in the sixth for the run-rule victory. Campbellsville recorded 16 hits in game two and held Pikeville to four.
Tennessee Southern vs. Shawnee State
The fifth-seeded Firehawks (25-23) defeated No. 8 seed Shawnee State (27-23) 5-0 in game one. Tennessee Southern tallied 11 hits in the victory and limited the Bears to just four. The Firehawks scored two runs in the first innings and added three in the fourth.
Tennessee Southern won the series with an 8-0 victory in six innings in game two. The Firehawks struck first in the first inning scoring two runs. Tennessee Southern scored at least one run from the third inning to the sixth inning for the run-rule victory.
Cumberlands vs. Georgetown
10th-seeded Georgetown (16-29) defeated No. 3 seed Cumberlands (36-14) 2-1 in nine innings in gamed one. The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kaylyn Barnett lead-off home run in the top of the first inning.
Emily Bryant led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to right field. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Bryant tied the game after stealing third and then reaching home on an error. Barnett drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth with a single into right field.
Lindsey Wilson vs. Thomas More.
Fourth-seeded Lindsey Wilson (34-14) got past No. 9 seed Thomas More (17-28) 3-0. The game was scoreless through the first four innings with neither team recording a hit. Zakiya Sizemore gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead with an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth. Makea Al-Kaluau and Kylie Brown also drove in a run in the inning to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead.
